If I could leave six stars I would. Jessie is an absolute angel. She went out of her way to make us all feel welcome and at home. After spending 3 weeks at the Arctic Char Inn, I felt more like family than a guest. Delicious meals and friendly conversations made it difficult to say good bye. Location and Geography: It is situated on the shores of Prince Albert Sound, approximately 1,400 km northwest of Yellowknife and 450 km north of the Arctic Circle.
Climate: Ulukhaktok experiences a subarctic climate, characterized by long, extremely cold winters and short, cool summers. Winter average high around -24.3°C (-11.7°F), average low around -31.8°C (-25.2°F). Summers are relatively dry compared to other seasons, with temperatures ranging from around 12.8°C (55°F), average low around 5.2°C (41.4°F).
History: The first people to settle in the area were Natkusiak and his family in 1937. The Hudson’s Bay Company relocated to the area in 1939, and a Roman Catholic mission was established the same year. The community was renamed Ulukhaktok on April 1, 2006, to reflect its traditional name.
Culture: The name “Ulukhaktok” means “the place where ulu parts are found” or “a large bluff where we used to collect raw material to make ulus”. The community is known for its rich cultural heritage and traditional practices. Local languages are Kangiryuarmiutun, a dialect of Inuinnaqtun (part of the Inuvialuktun group) and English.
Wildlife: Ulukhaktok is home to a variety of wildlife, thanks to its unique Arctic environment. Some notable species you might encounter are Union Caribou, Polar Bears, Muskox, Beluga Whales, amongst many others.

Visit the Ulukhaktok Arts Centre to see local Inuit art, including carvings, prints, and crafts. The centre often hosts exhibitions and workshop. You can participate in art workshops, learn about traditional crafts, and purchase unique souvenirs.
Ulukhaktok is a great place for wildlife enthusiasts. Keep an eye out for polar bears, muskox, caribou, and various bird species. Take guided tours or go on your own wildlife spotting adventure. Bring your binoculars and camera to capture the beauty of the Arctic wildlife.
The waters around Ulukhaktok are rich with marine life, including beluga whales and various fish species. Go fishing or take a boat tour to explore the coastline and see marine wildlife up close.
The rugged Arctic landscape offers beautiful hiking trails and nature walks. Explore the tundra, hike along the coastline, and enjoy the stunning views of the Arctic wilderness.
