Qikiqtarjuaq, also known as “Qik,” is a small and welcoming community located just north of the Arctic Circle on Broughton Island in Nunavut’s Qikiqtaaluk Region. Known for its breathtaking landscapes and strong cultural heritage, Qikiqtarjuaq offers a unique glimpse into life in the Arctic.
Geography: Situated off the eastern coast of Baffin Island, Qikiqtarjuaq is known as the “Iceberg Capital of Nunavut,” thanks to the many icebergs that drift past its shores. The community is also near the northern boundary of Auyuittuq National Park, making it an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking to hike, ski, or explore the rugged Arctic terrain.
Wildlife: The region is home to diverse Arctic wildlife, including ringed seals, polar bears, bowhead whales, and narwhals. Bird watchers will enjoy the Qaqulluit National Wildlife Area, a nesting site for northern fulmars.
Community & Culture: Qikiqtarjuaq has a vibrant community spirit, hosting an annual Suicide Prevention Walk and a two-week-long Christmas and New Year’s celebration, where visitors are welcome to join in the festivities.
Climate: The Arctic climate can be extreme, with winter temperatures plunging as low as -40°C, while summer temperatures hover around 10°C. From late May to mid-July, the region enjoys 24 hours of continuous sunlight, creating a truly unique experience.
History: Once an important site for whaling, Qikiqtarjuaq was also home to a NORAD military station during the Cold War. Formerly known as Broughton Island, the community adopted its current name in 1998.
