Naujaat, formerly known as Repulse Bay until 2015, is an Inuit hamlet located on the Arctic Circle in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut, Canada.
Location and Geography: Situated on the shores of Hudson Bay at the north end of Roes Welcome Sound, which separates Southampton Island from the mainland.
Climate: Naujaat experiences a tundra climate with long, cold winters and short, cool summers.
History: “Naujaat” means “seagulls’ nesting place” in Inuktitut, named after a cliff where seagulls nest each June. First visited by Europeans in the 1740s, it became a popular whaling ground by the late 1800s. Hudson’s Bay Company opened a trading post in 1911, followed by a rival post from Revillon Frères in 1923 and a Roman Catholic Mission in 1932.
