Koomiut Co-op
Kugaaruk, formerly known as Pelly Bay, is a small hamlet located on the southeastern shore of Pelly Bay, off the Gulf of Boothia on the western side of the Simpson Peninsula in Nunavut, Canada.
History: The historical inhabitants of Kugaaruk are the Arviligjuarmiut, who are Netsilik Inuit descendants of the ancient Thule people. The Inuit of Kugaaruk were among the last indigenous peoples in North America to have contact with Europeans in the latter part of the 19th century. The hamlet officially changed its name from Pelly Bay to Kugaaruk on December 3, 1999.
Culture: The culture of Kugaaruk is deeply rooted in the traditions and practices of the Inuit people, particularly the Arviligjuarmiut, who are descendants of the ancient Thule people. The primary language spoken is Inuktitut, which is integral to the cultural identity of the community. Efforts are made to preserve and promote the use of Inuktitut alongside English.
Wildlife: The area is known for its diverse wildlife, including caribou, muskox, narwhal, beluga, bowhead whale, polar bears, wolverine, and peregrine falcons.
