Coral Harbour, also known as Salliq in Inuktitut, is a small Inuit community located on Southampton Island in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut, Canada.
Location and Geography: Coral Harbour is approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) south of the Arctic Circle, situated at the northern end of Southampton Island, in Hudson Bay.
Climate: Coral Harbour, NU, experiences a subarctic climate with long, cold winters and short, cool summers with winter temperatures around -28°C (-18°F) and Summer around 13°C (55°F).
History: Coral Harbour, also known as Salliq, has a rich history that reflects its cultural and environmental significance. The area was originally inhabited by the Sadlermiut, who were thought to be the last remnants of the Paleo-Eskimo culture known as the Dorset or Tuniit. They were hunter-gatherers who relied on fishing, caribou hunting, and marine mammals.
Culture: The primary language spoken in Coral Harbour is Inuktitut. Efforts are made to preserve and promote the use of this language, which is integral to their identity and cultural expression. Inuit art, including carvings, prints, and textiles, plays a significant role in the local culture. Artisans create beautiful works that reflect their heritage and environment.
Wildlife: Coral Harbour is rich in wildlife, thanks to its unique Arctic environment. Some of the remarkable species you can find in the area: Caribou, Polar Bears, Arctic Fox, Bowhead Whales among many others!

East Bay Migratory Bird Sanctuary is an excellent location for observing a variety of bird species. A great spot for bird watching, especially during migration seasons is Harry Gibbons Migratory Bird Sanctuary. For ocean species, take a trek to Coats Island for spectacular sea mammal viewing, including walruses and whales.
