Baker Lake, or Qamani’tuaq in Inuktitut, is a distinctive hamlet in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut, Canada. As the only inland community in Nunavut, it sits at the mouth of the Thelon River on the shore of Baker Lake, about 320 km (200 miles) inland from Hudson Bay.
History: The area has a rich history, with the Hudson’s Bay Company establishing a trading post there in 1916. Anglican missionaries arrived in 1927, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police set up a post in 1930. The community has been involved in significant legal history as well, notably the 1979 case where the Baker Lake Hunters and Trappers Association challenged the Canadian government over mining exploration licenses.
Economy and Culture: The economy of Baker Lake is traditionally based on hunting, fishing, and trapping, though it has diversified over time. The community is known for its vibrant arts scene, particularly Inuit art, including carvings, prints, and textiles.
Wildlife and Environment: The surrounding area is home to the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq caribou herds, as well as other Arctic wildlife. The lake itself is fed by the Thelon and Kazan Rivers and has several islands and bays.
